SDM Ayurveda Pharmacy - A General Introduction

SDM Ayurveda Pharmacy is managed by SDM Bhaishajya Pratishtana, a charitable institution founded for the purpose of spreading the benefits of Ayurveda in the society. The guiding force has been Padma Vibhushan Shri D Veerendra Heggade, Member of Rajya Sabha, Dharmadhikari Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Temple, Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala as the president. With his great vision to serve Ayurveda to meet the challenges of the current day life the pharmacy is striving its level best to mark its contribution towards the betterment of the society through the field of Health & Ayurveda.

SDM Ayurveda Pharmacy at Udupi started its humble beginning as a practical hall for the training of the students in the subjects - Rasashastra and Bhaishajyakalpana in the year 1959 along with the advent of SDM Ayurveda College, Udupi. The medicines prepared under the strict supervision of the lecturers were supplied to the charitable hospital (IPD & OPD) attached with the college. Growing number of patients testified the skill of the physicians, lecturers and the quality of the medicines.

Gradually with the increasing demand from the old students, hospital setup (extended at Hassan, Mangalore, Chikmagalore, Dharmasthala) - under the visionary guidance of Shri D. Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari, Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala, our reverend president, the scope of the practical hall was extended into a venture with the name “Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara Ayurveda Pharmacy” at Udupi with 10,000 Sqft production area in 1997.

 By the year 2007, with the rising demand, the older pharmacy set up had to be replaced with a new “State of the art” infrastructure extending to about 45,000 Sqft area, which could meet rising demands/ expectations from the society.

SDM Ayurveda Pharmacy has introduced the latest methods in manufacturing process to emerge as a leader in the field (but strictly adhering to the basic concepts) - emphasizing efficacy, hygiene, quality standards and packaging in its wide range of products.

The pharmacy attained GMP certification in the year 2005 and ISO 9001:2008 certification in the year 2010 and then ISO 22000:2018 in the year 2017. 

• Automation and mechanization at all the steps where the technology was found to be feasible and possible - have been utilized leading to minimum human interference thereby preserving the sanctity of the medicines.
• The machineries used are of GMP grade using SS 316 grade steel for all the contact parts - thereby preserving the purity of the medicines.
• Also, state of the art infrastructure involving herb extraction, Vacuum concentration and spray drying (all hands-free operation) has established export grade superior herb extraction technology for the benefits of the mankind.
• The automation of Boiling, Packing, Bottling, Labelling, Tableting, Capsulation etc… are some of the examples of modern technology being utilized to the hilt.
• A full pledged quality control laboratory under supervised by qualified personnel assures the quality of the medicines.

The intention is to ensure purity and quality thus promising the efficacy to every bit of the medicine evolving from the SDM Ayurveda Pharmacy.

• Sandhilin – a non-greasy anti pain liniment.
• Manjushree Hair oil – an oil for the daily care of the Hairs.
• Haimavathi Vacha Choorna – for Autism (Pediatric neuro muscular developmental problem) as well as other psycho somatic developmental issues of the children.
• Meha Abhay Kashaya – an Astringent decoction (liquid) targeting to strengthen the body against Diabetes.
• Capsule Lashuna Rasayana – A garlic capsule targeting overall health including gut health, cardio vascular health as well as neurological health.
• Pooga syrup – A general syrup for the overall healthy growth of children
• Bhargavaprokta Rasayana – a confectionary prepared from Gooseberries (Amla) for all age group helping to improve the immunity & overall health.
• Dhanwantari Vati – a pill to facilitate the digestion issues in the elderly.
• Shishuposhaka taila – an oil for daily oil message to the newborns & babies.
• Ksheerabala 101 – a specialized preparation – to be taken in the form of 10 drops early in the morning in empty stomach – an excellent nervine tonic for all the issues of the old age.

• SDM Ayurveda Pharmacy has been pioneers in inculcating Rasayana Therapy (Rejuvenation therapy) in the day-to-day practice of Ayurveda so that superior clinical results can be delivered to the patient at the earliest. The Rejuvenative herbs has been developed for almost all the chronic diseases that has helped us to garner a special reputation in the field of therapeutics of Ayurveda worldwide.
• Range of the products extends into all dosage forms like - Kashayas (Aqueous extracts of herbs), Asavarishtas (Hydro alcoholic preparations), Vatis (Tablets/ Pills/ Capsules), Choornas (Fine powders), Bhasmas (Oxidized or Calcined metals/ Ores/ Minerals), Tailas (Medicated oils), Ghrita (Medicated ghee), Avalehya (Herbal confectionary) etc… encompassing 346 Classical products& 35 Patent products.

• The entire range of the products is so carefully designed that all the important and common medicines required for the general practice of Ayurveda is available.

• The pharmacy also gets involved in research activities – mainly in the form of pharmaceutical support - to the post graduate training undergoing - research scholars – at SDM Ayurveda College. Around 15-20 classical products undergo various clinical trials at the hospital attached demonstrating the clinical efficacy and hence the utility in therapeutics.

• As of today, more than 380 products are being offered for the health care of the society throughout 12 States (with a field force of more than 75 members) of the Indian states and 2 European countries viz. Croatia & Ukraine.

• Today the medicines from the pharmacy are available throughout Karnataka, Kerala, Goa, Tamilnadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, Odisha and Delhi.

• Well experienced staff and highly qualified supervising staff, more than 100 in numbers in total, dedicate their work to bring out excellent quality medicines to serve the humanity.
• Stringent quality control measures with a separate department for the same provide Quality Assurance in the successive batches. Stringent production standards are adhered with for best results.
